Cara Chair & Founder to Step Down

Pat Flanagan to Step Down as Chair of Cara

The Board of Cara has today announced that its Chair Pat Flanagan has decided to step down after 11 successful years.

As founder, Pat has worked tirelessly to establish Cara as the designated pan-disability sports organisation that it is today.  Pat had a vision for a country where people with disabilities have equal opportunities to participate in sport and physical activity. His role in establishing Cara, and working with Sport Ireland to develop a national network of Sport Inclusion Disability Officers, has greatly impacted on community participation opportunities for people with disabilities throughout Ireland.

Since 2007, Pat has guided the direction of the organisation to becoming a leading agency to support the provision of sport and physical activity for people with disabilities across Ireland. During this time, as Director and most recently as Chairperson, Cara has gone from strength to strength, receiving designation from Sport Ireland as a leading partner in Sports Irelands Policy on the participation of Sport by People with Disabilities and most recently has been recognised within the National Sports Policy as a significant partner to support the sport and physical activity sector.

John Treacy, Chief Executive of Sport Ireland said on behalf of Sport Ireland I would like to thank Pat for his many years of dedicated service to Cara and the disability sport sector. Pat has been one of the leading advocates for increased opportunities and facilities for people with disabilities and leaves behind him an impressive legacy. I would like to wish him all the very best for the future”.

Cara is now embarking on a recruitment process to appointing a new Chair and an announcement is expected to be made in the coming months. Jon Morgan has been appointed as Interim Chair and brings to the role a wealth of knowledge and experience, having served as CEO of Disability Sport Wales for 15 years. This, coupled with the skillset, passion and expertise of our CEO, Board and staff will ensure Cara continues to deliver on its strategic vision of putting disability sport and inclusive physical activity at the heart of the nation.

The Board and staff would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Pat for his leadership, commitment and contribution over the past 11 years.  His vision has lead to greater inclusion and greater opportunities for people with disabilities across the sport and physical activity sector in Ireland.
